Obesity: Hypothalamic Regulation of Food Intake

چکیده
Obesity etiology encompasses several factors; many of which are related with nutrition and behavioral disorders, endocrine alterations, drug use, neurologic and genetic diseases. The intriguing “fat epidemic”, with its staggering ever-growing numbers, has been the focus of speculation regarding the true reasons for its expansion, since sedentary lifestyle and changes in diets with fat intake alone cannot fully explain it [1]. The clustering of dyslipidemia, hypertension and glucose intolerance, predominantly in overweight individuals, at risk of heart disease, has been of concern and this increasing prevalence is partly attributable to a lack of exercise and partly to the availability of high carorie palatable food. In addition, obesity is highly heritable, with the estimated genetic contribution ranging from 60-84%. Current estimates suggest that over 1 billion people are overweight and over 300 million people are obese.

VENTROMEDIAL HYPOTHALAMIC NUCLEI AND FEEDING BEHAVIOR
The role of the ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus (VMN) in food behavior was studied in adult male rats, allocated in 3 groups: control, sham and lesioned. Electrolytic lesions were induced stereotaxically (1.2 mA, 15 sec). Results revealed a significant decrease (p<O.05) in body weight (BW) and food intake (FI) in the order of lesioned <sham <control during the fIrst week. However, ...
متن کاملP104: Obesity-Induced Neuroinflammation: Focus on Hypothalamic Inflammation
Obesity is a Health issue around the world. Obesity is not limited to body weight, generally associated with low grade inflammation and with a cluster of disorders generally referred to as "metabolic syndrome". Regarding obesity and relapse, long-term concentration was set on the hypothalamus. Most recently,obesity- Originated neuroinflammation has been shown to affect other brain str...
متن کاملRegulation of Appetite: Role of Serotonin and Hypothalamus
Serotonin (5-HT), a mono-aminergic neurotransmitter is biochemically derived from tryptophan and is mainly found in gastrointestinal tract, platelets and central nervous system of animals. Serotonin (5-HT) in coordination with hypothalamus plays an important role in the CNS control of appetite, eating behavior, and energy balance and body weight. It has a special role in control of carbohydrate...
متن کاملHypothalamic Sirt1 Regulates Food Intake in a Rodent Model System
Sirt1 is an evolutionarily conserved NAD(+) dependent deacetylase involved in a wide range of processes including cellular differentiation, apoptosis, as well as metabolism, and aging. In this study, we investigated the role of hypothalamic Sirt1 in energy balance. Pharmacological inhibition or siRNA mediated knock down of hypothalamic Sirt1 showed to decrease food intake and body weight gain. ...
متن کاملObesity: the role of hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase in body weight regulation.
Obesity is rapidly increasing and is of great public health concern worldwide. Although there have been remarkable developments in obesity research over the past 10 years, the molecular mechanism of obesity is still not completely understood. Body weight results from the balance between food intake and energy expenditure. Recent studies have found that hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase ...
متن کاملHypothalamic Control of Food Intake in Rats and Cats *
Marked variations in food intake have been described in various species following injury to certain parts of the hypothalamus, including an increased food intake or hyperphagia caused by lesions in the medial hypothalamus, especially lesions in or ventrolateral to the ventromedial nucleus; this hyperphagia leads to obesity."1418' 20 24 A decrease or complete inhibition of food intake has also b...
